Does Alaska need daylight savings?

March 8, 2008 · 2 Comments

Daylight SavingsIt’s that time of year again; tomorrow morning, millions of Americans will dutifully set their clocks one hour ahead to observe the twice-yearly ritual that is daylight savings. Aside from the eternal question “What are we doing with all this “saved” time anyway?”, it seems particularly absurd for Alaska to observe such an outdated ritual.

It’s the same thing every year – just as it’s starting to get light in the mornings when everyone is out on the roads, on their way to work, we have to set our clocks forward an hour, and the light is gone again.

The whole idea of daylight savings is ridiculous in this day and age, but if you need any more convincing about how futile an effort it is, check out this article from the Wall Street Journal that claims daylight savings actually wastes energy.

I’m so against having daylight savings time here. I’ve written a couple of posts against it and emailed them to my legislators. The time change really messes with kids–naps, bedtimes, waking up.

@subarcticmama – My thoughts exactly. I have a 5 month old, and the time change has definitely been messing with his sleep schedule (which previously had been very good).
